Moving home in the winter

If you’re planning to move home in the winter months, it’s likely that you’ll be concerned about how the season’s weather may impact your move. Technically it will remain the same, but there are some things that you should consider to ensure that your move is as stress free as it can be.

Light and heat

Days are ‘shorter’ and colder in the winter, so make sure that you don’t cancel your utilities until the last moment. Also set up an account with utility providers at your new property well in advance. You don’t want your first night in your new home to be a freezing one! It could also be worth talking to the sellers before moving day, to ask them to leave the heating on low to prevent issues like pipes freezing and possibly bursting. And it’s worth booking up your removal as soon as possible.

Think about safety

If there’s ice and snow around, you’ll need to make the time to clear the steps and path to your door (along with whatever route the removals team will be walking to their truck) in both the old and new homes and lay down some grit or salt. This will keep both you, and your family, and the removal team safe from slips and falls. It might be wise to keep a spade or shovel handy in case of extra snowfall during the move, and to make sure that everyone has waterproof jackets and shoes or boots to hand. Check the removals company policy on rescheduling in the event of bad weather and have a plan around what you can do if this happens.

Protect your new home

Moving in and out of houses in wet or snowy weather risks dirtying floors or carpets, or creating hazardous slippery areas on wooden, polished or lino flooring. Ask the removals company if they can bring floor protectors, or if this isn’t an option ask their advice about what you can use to keep your home, and everyone moving in and out of it, safe.

Make sure that everything is well packed

In wet or snowy weather all your belongings need to be covered and protected. If you’re packing yourself, you could source packaging materials from your removal company (and make sure you label all your boxes so that you know where everything is!), or alternatively you could ask for a quote to have your goods packed professionally. Pack a box of essentials to take with you to your new home, with things like spare clothes, snacks, mugs, kettles and teabags, so that you can warm up once you get there. If anyone needs medication throughout the day, then keep that with you and don’t forget chargers for any vital mobile phones or tablets.

Get comfy!

Unpack and hang your curtains first to keep your new home warmer, and for privacy. It could also be useful to have some blankets and throws to hand for while you wait for the house to warm up, as it’ll likely be extra cold having had the doors open for much of the day while you move in.
