How to move your house plants

If you prepare in advance, moving your precious house plants needn’t be a headache. Make sure that they arrive safely in your new home and continue to thrive by reading our recommendations.

Preparation

Firstly, decide whether you want to take all your plants, and if not, you could ask your family, friends or neighbours if they would like to have some of them. Then have a look at the plants you have left to see what shape they’re in. Moving is an ideal time to prune and repot your plants, and sturdy shatter-proof plastic pots are a better choice than clay or ceramic ones. It’s a good idea to do any repotting a few weeks before your move to allow your plants time to adjust. Lastly, make sure that you give them all a good water and feed 2-3 days before you move. You won’t want to do this on moving day, or you could have water everywhere!

Packing

Get some sturdy boxes to put your plants into. Before you add them into a box, it’s a good idea to cover the base of it in plastic in case of dampness, and also to cover the base of your plants in bubble wrap or a plastic bag so prevent the compost spilling out. Cushion the space between plants within the box with paper or bubble wrap to prevent them falling over and getting damaged. If you have taller plants, it’s wise to carefully tie the leaves together and then wrap them with paper or plastic to protect them while they are in transit. If you tuck in the box lids before you pack the plants, it will provide some necessary light and oxygen for them during the moving process.

Talk to your removal team

You either need to move your plants yourself in your car, or alternatively they need to be the last items to put in the removal van to keep them safe. Talk with the removals company in advance of your move to find out how, and if, they will move them. Some removals companies have a policy of not moving plants. If you are moving the plants in your car, ideally make sure they are packed tightly in footwells, backseat or the boot to prevent them falling over.

At your new home

Once you arrive at your new home, it’s important to unpack your plants as soon as possible. This will give them the best chance of survival. Water them and try to replicate the conditions they were in previously. This will help them to acclimatise quicker and reduce shock levels. For example, in your old home, were they by a window, near a radiator or out of direct sunlight?
