How to pack clothes when you’re moving home
If you’re packing to move, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of your clothes and end up just throwing them all into black bin bags. In the long run this won’t make your life any easier, as you could end up with creased clothes, split bags or even clothes accidentally thrown into the rubbish! It’s worth taking your time and thinking through the best way to pack them.
Firstly, do you need them all?
Moving is a perfect opportunity to ‘declutter’ and get rid of anything which you no longer use or need. This applies to clothes too! How long is it since you last wore them, do they still fit, or do you still like them? You could start sorting through in the months before your move and recycle any you no longer want or need via charity shops. Having less to pack can only be a good thing and you’ll be amazed by how much you get rid of!
Give yourself a stress-free packing experience
Think about whether or not you’d like to use wardrobe boxes. These are large upright boxes with a bar inside that acts like a wardrobe rail, meaning that your clothes can go straight in on their hangers. It’s worth asking your remover to include these in your quote, along with some boxes to transport the folded clothes from your drawers. Remember to label them with the room and contents to make them easier to identify when you come to unpack them.
If you have suitcases pack some folded or rolled clothes into them, perhaps the items which you will need soonest when you are in your new home. If you fold or roll your clothes, you’ll save considerable space and be able to fit more in, and if you have any packing cubes it’s worth using those too. And don’t forget how useful vacuum packing bags can be, especially to save room with more bulky items like coats. Also, if you want to separate out your clothes by season, vacuum bags are a great way to store items that you won’t be using in the months to come. Don’t leave them vacuum oacked too long though as the lack of air circulation can cause mould to grow especially if there is a lot of moisture in the air, asthere is often in the UK. You could also pop in some silica gel sachets which may help combat the humidity.
Pack shoes and accessories separately
Shoes and accessories can be easily damaged or could easily damage your clothes if they’re in the same box or suitcase. Shoes are best packed in their original boxes or if not, in a packing box in a shoe organiser or with bubble wrap and packing paper. If you are using a larger box, remember to put the heaviest shoes at the bottom to make it easier to carry. Items such as hats, belts or bags could be individually wrapped and placed in smaller boxes, where they’ll be better protected. It’s worth keeping any valuable items like jewellery with you during a move rather than adding them in with the rest of your packing.
