How to move your electronics and white goods

Electronic and white goods are often among the most valuable possessions in a home. If not well prepared, wrapped or packed they can easily be broken during a house move, and if you prepare and pack them yourselves, they may not be covered by your mover’s insurance. We recommend using a professional mover, like Perrys, to wrap, pack and move all your goods, but if you are looking to do some or all of that process yourself, here’s a guide on how to prepare your precious items so that they survive the journey to your new home.

Kitchen appliances

White goods like washing machines and fridges need preparation before loading into a removal van, so if you decide to do that yourself then you need to know exactly how to move them. Dishwashers and washing machines will need to be disconnected, and it’s wise to employ a professional to do that for you. With a washing machine you’ll need to turn off the power, remove any water left inside by using the drain hose, disconnect the water supply and secure the drum with the transit bolts which were taken out when the machine was first installed. You may also want to wrap it in bubble wrap to absorb any shocks which could occur during the move. If you move a dishwasher, you’ll need to remove the power and water supply, and secure the door to prevent it opening. Bubble wrap or moving blankets can keep the appliance safe during the move.

Moving a fridge requires more than wrapping. You’ll need to unplug, then remove all the shelving inside to wrap and pack separately. If it’s a fridge freezer you’ll need to defrost the freezer section, and then fasten both doors so that they don’t swing open during the move. Use a moving blanket for protection in the van.

It’s wise to use a dolly to move these large and heavy items, to keep them safe and to prevent any injury to yourself.

Smaller electrical items would benefit from being wrapped in bubble wrap and being put in boxes for protection.

Electronics

A good start is to find all your user manuals as they will help you to both dismantle and set back up once you get to your new home. Then gather up all the remotes and remove the batteries in case they leak en route. Make sure that any DVD, CD or record players are secure by taping the drives shut and the lids down. With printers, you need to remove the toner cartridges to transport separately and secure the printhead in place.

Make sure that you keep the correct cables with each item. It can be a good idea to put different coloured stickers on the leads and the items they are used with, and to take photos of the cable arrangements before you dismantle them.

If you have a computer then the same techniques apply, though it’s a good idea to move something like a laptop in your own car rather than in a van.

All electronics should be securely wrapped in bubble wrap or blankets and placed in suitably sized boxes, with extra packing inside so that they don’t move around in transit.
