How to do an eco-friendly house move

With climate change and an increased awareness of the need to protect the environment, many people want to reduce their environmental footprint. With that in mind we’ve put together some ideas on how you can make your move less wasteful and more sustainable.

Lighten your load

Moving is the ideal time to declutter and get rid of all the things that you either don’t want or won’t need in your new home. This is a process that you can plan and start well in advance of your move to reduce any last-minute stress. You can donate, sell or recycle any unwanted or broken belongings. By doing this you’ll lessen the amount you’ll need to pack which in turn will reduce the amount of packing materials you need to use, the overall weight of your load, and reducing fuel consumption. It could make the difference in the size of vehicle we use and how long the move will take which may mean a smaller cost to you too!

Reduce your food waste

Don’t waste the food in your fridge or freezer. Plan your meals and gradually run down what you have, so that you don’t have any left-over food on moving day. You can donate anything you don’t eat to friends, neighbours or if suitable a food bank.

Minimise your packing materials

If you choose to fo the packing and/or move yourself there are various ways you can reduce the amount of packing materials you need.

  • Use what you already have. You could pack your clothes in suitcases, laundry baskets, storage containers, dresser drawers or even shopping bags.
  • Pack fragile items in towels, bedding or curtains.
  • Rent packing boxes from your removal company which will then be reused for other moves.

Pack carefully

If you are doing your own packing, you can minimise the number of boxes you use by maximising the space in each box. Once you’ve put the heavier items on the bottom, and lighter items on the top, fill the gaps with clothes or linens.

Eco-friendly cleaning

It’s usual to clean your house ready for its new owner to move in. When you do this, you can reduce your environmental impact by using non-toxic eco-friendly cleaning products and microfibre cloths that can be washed instead of anything disposable, like paper towels.

Use a reputable removal company

If you decide to move yourself, you’ll no doubt be moving your belongings in a small van, or even a car, which could mean more journeys back and forth, resulting in higher fuel emissions. It’s more sustainable to move all your belongings in one go in a larger vehicle provided by an environmentally friendly moving company such as Perry Removals. Half of our fleet is already Euro 6 – this means any harmful exhaust emissions are reduced, with the standards specifically targeting nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (THC and NMHC) and particulate matter (PM).

Make sure your removal company has an environmental policy

At Perry’s we are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint and hold ISO 14001/2015 certification.
