Aim to move during the second trimester
The second trimester (weeks 13-27) is often considered the most comfortable time to move house during pregnancy. During the first trimester (weeks 1-12), many women experience symptoms such as morning sickness, extreme tiredness, cramping and digestive issues, which can make the moving process more challenging. By the second trimester, morning sickness has often eased, and energy levels tend to be higher. At the same time, you haven’t yet reached the later stages of pregnancy when physical discomfort can increase. During the third trimester (weeks 28-40), your growing baby can contribute to symptoms such as back pain, shortness of breath and heartburn, making a house move more demanding.
Research local GP surgeries
If you’re moving away from your current area, it’s a good idea to research GP surgeries near your new home before moving day. You can find local GP practices by entering your new postcode on the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-gp
When you register with a new GP tell them that you are pregnant on your registration form along with how many weeks along you are. This can help ensure your medical records are transferred promptly.
Plan well ahead of time
Good planning can significantly reduce the stress and anxiety that often come with moving home, especially when you’re expecting. Creating a moving checklist can help you stay organised and feel more in control. Take time to decide what you’ll be taking with you, what can be donated or sold, and when you might need help from friends or family. It’s also worth booking your removal company as early as possible. With one major task taken care of, you’ll have more time to focus on yourself and your growing family.
No heavy lifting!
Moving home can be physically demanding. If you are packing yourself, it’s best to start well in advance. Pack a small amount at a time in small boxes to keep weight to a minimum, and clearly label each box so that you know what’s in it and where you want it to go in your new home. And of course, it’s best to avoid too much bending down when packing or unpacking, along with any heavy lifting which could put strain on your body. Pregnancy can drain your energy, along with producing hormones that can make you emotional, so give yourself plenty of down time and don’t overdo it. For an easier option, lighten the load by arranging for your professional removal company to pack and unpack for you.
Pack a hospital bag and a moving day essentials bag
Being prepared for both moving day and your baby’s arrival will provide valuable peace of mind. Pack your hospital bag well in advance with everything you’ll need for labour and your hospital stay, such as maternity notes, comfortable clothing, toiletries and any medication. Along with that you’ll also need a bag specifically for moving day essentials with items like medication, water, snacks, a phone charger, ear buds to listen to some relaxing music, important documents and a change of clothes. Also a folding chair can be useful to keep on hand, in case you need to rest in your new home before more comfortable seats or your bed has arrived!
