Ask colleagues, friends or family if they have any personal recommendations of removal companies. Their experiences could provide valuable insight when it comes to making a decision. Also look at company websites to see if they have any testimonials and check out online reviews on sites such as Google, Trustpilot or their own websites. And don’t forget that social media can be a great source of information as platforms like Facebook and Twitter (X) and are often used by customers to air their experiences, with both positive reviews and complaints. It’s an interesting way of finding out how a company addresses their customers’ concerns. Are they politely and proactively relating to any criticism or complaints, or are they ignoring or responding aggressively?

Get more than one quote

It’s wise to get three or four quotes from removal companies which provide similar services, and make sure that all the services you need are included into the quote up front. Think about if you want a packing and unpacking service, or maybe you’ll want some of your furniture to be dismantled and reassembled. Write a list of all the questions you need to be answered before you give each company a call such as, “Do they belong to a trade association? What kind of insurance is provided? What are their policies around delays; do they offer a late key waiver?” or “Do they have experience of packing and handling fragile or valuable items?”.

The cheapest deal isn’t necessarily the best deal!

If you ask for a quote from a ‘man with a van’ then it will no doubt be cheaper, but can you be assured of a reliable service, and that all your goods will arrive at your new home in one piece? And remember that it’s a red flag if a company doesn’t provide a contract and only accepts cash, as they may be working in the black economy and avoiding paying taxes! Obviously, price is a key concern for most of us, but it shouldn’t be the primary selection criteria when it comes to removals.

If you only ask for quotes from companies with long standing, good reputations your move is more likely to be problem-free. We would highly recommend engaging with removal companies that are members of a trustworthy trade association, like The British Association of Removers (BAR), whose members are committed to high standards and are obliged to follow a Chartered Trading Standards Institute Code of Practice. This means that customers are protected, and BAR members are obliged to be transparent in all communications. The BAR also has an advanced payment guarantee scheme for home movers and provide a free independent dispute resolution service for extra peace of mind. Quotes from BAR members may vary but you can feel confident that they will all be both reliable and professional.
