Moving in the school holidays

Moving home with children can be a challenge at any time of year, but are the longer school holidays the best time to move? And, if that’s your only option, how can you make a success of it?

Book in early!

Many parents are keen on moving in the summer to give their children time to settle in before the new school year starts, be that at the same school or at a new school in a different area. This means that August is a particularly busy time of year for removal companies, so ideally contact your mover early in the process. Similarly, the longer Easter or winter holidays can also give extra time for a settling in period before children have to go back to school.

Avoid the busiest days

Try to avoid weekends or bank holidays, as these are the most popular moving dates which are also the times when people are travelling to go on holiday congesting up the roads which might affect you depending on your current home and new home. It’s wise to go for a mid-week moving date if you can; Tuesdays or Wednesdays are quieter days and so are often more readily available. Try to book several weeks in advance if you can, to have a greater chance of a date which works best for you.

Involve your children

If your children understand what is happening, then they are likely to be happier and more co-operative. Change can be particularly difficult for children, so if you involve them in the process they can feel more in control of the situation. If possible, take them to visit your new home or the area it’s in, or show them pictures of their new room and talk about how they can decide on its decoration or arrangement. And let them pack some of their own things. You could give them boxes or bags to pack their toys in.

Organise a playdate

You could arrange for your child or children to spend moving day with a relative or friend so that they are looked after and kept occupied while you’re busy with the move. If they must be at home and don’t want to be involved (for whatever reason) the moving day might not be the best day to try and enforce any time limits on screen time!

Hot weather

It can be hot in the Easter or summer holidays, and though warmer, drier weather is ideal for moving, it can also make the process more exhausting. It would be a good idea to prepare in advance with snacks, beverages and a ready supply of cold drinks for the day. You might even consider hats and sun cream!

In your new home

Keep a positive excitement going for you children by setting up their rooms first. This will help them to settle in and give them somewhere to hang out while you unpack!
