Our 70 years of history

Perry’s has gone from strength to strength over the years, building up the family business whilst developing an excellent track record in the removal industry. We’re proud of our history in the removals industry and of all the staff and family, past and present, who’ve worked so hard to enable us to reach where we are today.

After the Second World War, Jim Perry returned from Burma to set up in the Essex area with his new wife May. After a number of jobs on farms as a mechanic handyman, he bought some derelict cottages in Broxted and an old second-hand van. With this first van Jim ran a mobile fruit and vegetable round in the evenings and weekends, whilst still working as an engineer during the day. In between he did local deliveries, and Perry Removals was born!

From this humble beginning, Jim gradually built up his haulage business, which in those days meant anything that would fit on the lorry was part of the trade! Between 1950 and 1970 a constant flow of new regulations from various governments meant that Jim had to change direction a few times to comply with the ever-changing legislation (nothing new there!).

By 1972 Jim was looking towards retirement. The business passed onto two of his sons, David and Bob, backed by their older sister Sheila. By 1979 they had ceased all haulage operations to concentrate on the ever-increasing removal and storage trade. The sale of the big haulage lorries helped to fund a massive investment in new lorries and warehouses specially designed and built for furniture handling.

Perry Removals went from strength to strength and in 1994 the opportunity arose to acquire the long-established company Direct Removals of Bishop’s Stortford. With the strong reputation of Perry’s and the added strength of Direct Removals, two excellent teams became one under the new name of Perry Direct. Despite the recession of the early 90s Perry Direct came to be a by-word for quality removals.

In 2002 David decided to retire from removals. Bob became Chairman with his sister Shelia as a new Director. At about the same time Nick Martin joined the company with a wealth of experience in the field of corporate removals, swiftly becoming Managing Director of the limited company Perry Removals Ltd.

In 2004 Bob’s daughter Emma joined the company having graduated from Loughborough University with a First-Class Honours Degree. She ran the newly acquired Sudbury office and built up the international side of the business as the manager of Overseas Moving Ltd.

The Perry Group has continued to increase in size over the years and acquired Movers of Cambridge Ltd in 2007. In that same year, Perry Removals Ltd had a total of 12 removals vans, 3 pre-pack vans and over 25 staff members to serve the area.

In 2010 Perry Removals took on the development of the web-based commercial warehousing company Perry Online Ltd and Perry Datashred.

In the course of time many family members have been involved in Perry Removals and have all contributed to the growth and wellbeing of the company. Regardless of size, the same traditions of a family concern still prevailed to maintain a quality removal service throughout East Anglia, London, the UK, Europe plus a network of agents throughout the world, all dedicated to providing the very best in relocation services.

In 2021 Nick and Jane Martin took over the company, with a prime focus on ensuring that the Perry commitment to quality continues to this day.
