Tips for stress-free office removals

Tips for stress-free office removals

Office moving can be a complex and time-consuming undertaking. You don’t want your relocation to impact your business continuity, so here are some tips to enable you to move in an efficient and stress-free manner.

Declutter

Home moves are an ideal opportunity to declutter and get rid of anything you no longer need. Office moves are no exception to this rule. Do you have anything sitting in corners or office cupboards unused for months or years? Maybe redundant furniture, computers or printers. Take a methodical walk around your office space and figure out what you do and don’t need. You may be surprised by how much you can get rid of! Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that the cost of office space continues to rise, and decluttering can help to reduce the square footage you need to pay for in your new location.

Perry’s Data Shred

Don’t let unnecessary paperwork clog up your new office space. It’s a good idea to shred and dispose of any documents you don’t need before your move. You can meet your GDPR requirements and protect yourself from data thieves by using Perry’s Data Shred. We provide a secure and confidential service, and are credited with a British Standard, BS EN 15713 – ‘Secure destruction of confidential material’ and so are ideal for commercial clients. You can also be sure that with our strong commitment to the environment and reducing our carbon footprint, that the paper shredded is sent back to a paper mill to be reused.

It’s possible to book a one-off collection before your move, and then, if required, something more regular once you’ve settled into your new office space. If you book regular collections, we provide a bin (for either inside the office or out) which is emptied at a pre-arranged date and time into bags to be removed and shredded off-site. Special rates are offered for large quantities. The collections could be weekly, monthly or bespoke. For one-off collections, bags are provided, along with security tags for sealing. With either type of collection, a Certificate of Destruction will be sent to you once the paper has been securely disposed of.

Storage

If you find you have too much to move, or you need to keep documents safely off-site, Perry’s have excellent storage or document storage facilities. If you have larger items or seasonal items that aren’t needed regularly you may well find that it is cheaper to let us store them for you rather than take up premium space in your office. You can be sure that all your stored items will be housed in a dry, secure container allocated only to you.

Plan your move

Planning is all important in commercial moving, so to help you we have developed an ‘Office and Commercial Checklist’ which you can download for free

It’s an invaluable document which will help you to make sure you have everything covered and enable you to plan every aspect of your move, from getting your quote, to insurance to who to tell about your move, along with an informative and useful ‘To Do’ list.

Perry Removals can help

Perry’s are experts in business and commercial moves, large or small. Due to our years of experience, we know how stressful the planning of complex moves can be, so if you choose to use our services we can provide you with an expert, experienced and dedicated business relocation manager who will work and plan closely with you to meet all your requirements. Our removals staff are all highly trained to efficiently pack, move, deliver and reinstall for you, and we can even move you after office hours or at the weekend to cause minimal disruption to your working days.

The benefits of shredding

The benefits of shredding

Whether for personal or work documents, shredding is the ideal way to clear space in your home or office whilst keeping sensitive information protected.

Personal shredding

Identity theft is often in the news, and cases are on the rise every year. Though much of this crime takes place via phone, email, or text messaging, many of us still have our personal details on documents we receive through the post, perhaps on bank statements, financial investment, or insurance documentation. Armed with your personal details, criminals can exploit that information to open retail accounts or obtain loans or credit cards.

With this in mind it’s crucial to take extra care to protect your personal information and dispose of anything recording your details with extra care. It’s possible to buy a small shredder to use at home but using them can be frustrating and time consuming. Most can only shred a small amount at a time and if you use them for too long, they can overheat so you have to wait for them to cool down before you start again! And then there’s the recycling. If you put your shredded paper in your home recycling bin it could end up in landfill and some Local Authorities won’t accept shredded paper at all.

Commercial shredding

Shredding can save you money! With commercial rates rising (a 10% increase has been reported this year), office space is becoming more expensive. Space is at a premium, so along with the obvious security considerations, it’s important to free up more office space for staff or to simply reduce the square footage you pay for. Shredding old paperwork that you don’t need can help you to unclutter your offices or free up that space.

Security wise, it’s crucial to shred confidential documents to protect them from data thieves. A safe and secure way of disposing of these documents also needs to be evidenced in order to meet GDPR requirements and is a good option to give both your clients and employees confidence in the professionalism of your business. It’s also worth remembering that outsourcing your shredding to a trustworthy company can save you both money and time. Something we all need more of!

Not only can Perry’s offer a secure shredding service, if you need to keep documents safely off-site, our document storage facilities are first-rate. You can be sure that your archiving will be housed in a dry, secure container allocated only to you, and will be easily accessible within office hours.

Perry’s Data Shred

Perry’s Data Shred are credited with a British Standard, BS EN 15713 – ‘Secure destruction of confidential material’ and is ideal for personal or commercial clients. We provide a secure, confidential service and, as we have a strong commitment to the environment and reducing our carbon footprint, you can be sure that all the paper shredded is sent back to a paper mill to be reused.

You can book either a one-off collection or something more regular for your business. If you book regular collections, we provide a bin (for either inside the office or out) which is emptied at a pre-arranged date and time into bags to be removed and shredded off-site. Moving your outdoor space: what to take and how to move it

Moving your outdoor space: what to take and how to move it.

It can be easy to overlook how much you want or need to take with you from outdoor spaces when you move home: garden furniture; plants, shrubs and small trees in pots; hanging baskets; lighting; chimineas, firepits or pizza ovens; children’s items like trampolines, swings or slides; or even greenhouses, sheds or summerhouses. And then there’s the contents of your garden shed or lock-up – tools, lawnmowers, bikes etc. Once you begin to work out how much you want to move it quickly starts to add up!

Moving plants

Not all removal companies are insured for carrying plants as they are deemed to be a ‘live item’, and some will not move heavy plant pots or allow them on their trucks. If your plants are in heavy or breakable pots (frost damage or roots can cause breaks which cause the pot to fracture when moved, and wooden pots or troughs can rot over time), it’s advisable to repot them into lighter and less breakable plastic pots a few weeks before the move. This will make them easier to handle, and also means that the more valuable pots can be wrapped in blankets or bubble wrap to be moved more safely.

Take advice from your chosen removal company about how to pack your plants. They need to be tightly packed and padded in boxes or containers, and some taller plants will need tubing or clingfilm to keep them safe. It’s also a good idea to use newspaper or cheap felt to press over plant pot tops to keep the soil in place, and don’t water them immediately before the move as this will just add weight to the pots.

It’s also important to remember that plants, shrubs and trees which are growing in your garden (in the ground rather than in pots) form part of the sales agreement (included in the homes fixtures and fittings) when you sell your house, unless the removal of them has been written into the agreement at the time of the sale (an itemised list would need to be provided). So, if you start uprooting your favourites to take with you, you may be invalidating the sale and falling foul of the law. The same rule would apply to outdoor structures such as greenhouses, sheds or summerhouses.

Moving garden furniture and extras

If you’re paying for a packing service, then your garden furniture can be included in the quote. If you’re packing it yourself, the best protection can be had by wrapping the furniture in blankets or/and bubble wrap. Items such as lights, pizza ovens etc. need to be bubble wrapped and, if possible, placed in boxes. If the items are large, then you’ll need to dismantle them before the move.

Children’s garden equipment

You can request that your removal company dismantle and reassemble items such as trampolines, climbing frames, swings and slides (though this will incur an extra fee), or you can do this yourself. Note that not all play equipment can be moved. Sometimes nuts and bolts can rust solid if they have been outside for a long time and professionally installed equipment is often concreted into the ground. Make sure that you label a bag to put all the screws or connectors into – one bag for each item of equipment. It’s wise to have a box dedicated to these types of ‘odds’, so that you know where they all are when you reach your destination.

Greenhouses, sheds and summerhouses

Removal companies do not usually dismantle and re-erect garden structures. If they don’t, then it’s possible to find specialist firms who will do this for you, or you can do it yourself. Be aware that sometimes glass hardens in the sun and can become very brittle, so consider if the structure is actually worth moving. At Perry’s we do not move greenhouses, but we can move garden sheds and summer houses if the necessary additional materials are provided, such as new felt for the roof. Also, a concreted area needs to exist when the structure is to be repositioned at the new home.

The contents of your garage or garden shed

You may have lots of garden equipment with sharp blades or spiky ends. Wrap the ends in newspaper and bubble wrap and bundle the long-handled tools together. Also, tape any sharp-edged tools shut before you wrap them up. Any power tools need to be put in boxes. You’ll need to responsibly dispose of (or transport yourself) the kind of items which removal companies will not carry, such as pesticides, oil, gas, paint, anti-freeze etc. You could give them to a friend or neighbour if they are still usable or take them to your local recycling centre. Remember that petrol mowers and any other equipment which uses petrol should be drained or run dry.

Happy to help

If you’re unsure about what to do with any of the items in your garden, ask our advice. At Perry’s we specialise in stress-free moves so we are always happy to help.

Professional mover, ‘man with a van’ or DIY?

Professional mover, ‘man with a van’ or DIY?

As the cost of living continues to rise, it may seem like a good idea to save money on your move by either using a ‘man with a van’ or going DIY by hiring a van and doing the whole move yourself. It’s a step that many have taken to their own cost for a variety of reasons. If going DIY, do you feel confident driving the van? Will all your items fit into the van in one load (one to consider if you’re not moving locally)? Are you able to lift excessively heavy objects? Does your insurance cover any breakages? You’ll also need to source all your packing materials. And these are just some of the considerations! Here at Perry’s we can guarantee that if you use us for your move, we can save you time and stress in the short term and potentially money in the long run.

So, what are the benefits of using a professional mover?

Professionalism and experience
By hiring a trustworthy and reputable company like Perry’s, you can be sure that the team will be fully trained, conscientious and professional, with many years of moving experience. You will be able to relax knowing that we have everything in hand and know exactly what we’re doing and how to do it.

Trade association membership
Most professional moving companies are members of The British Association of Removers (BAR) which represents the benchmark for quality in the removals industry. Perry’s are long term members of the Association so you can be confident of our integrity, professionalism and expertise. All BAR Members must pass an annual audit and prove that they can meet the high standards of the Association. Also, as a customer you’ll benefit from the BAR Advanced Payment Guarantee scheme, and in the event of a dispute, a free, independent resolution service.

Extra services
A professional mover can offer you extra services such as:

  • Packing and unpacking: This can save you an enormous amount of time and hassle.
  • Inexpensive interim storage: Useful if there is a delay in your move and cheaper than taking things into self-store.
  • Specialised equipment such as trolleys and hoists for heavy objects: It could be impossible to move some items otherwise, and an injury could be sustained if you try to lift or carry something the wrong way.

Stress limitation
There are so many ways in which hiring a professional mover can reduce your stress around a move. You’ll have less to think about, save valuable time and know that there is less risk of damage to your possessions (but also that you are covered by comprehensive insurance in the unlikely event of anything going wrong).

Many people aren’t aware that as a seller, you have until 1pm on the day of completion to leave the property. This can cause problems in a chain, especially if everything happens late and for some reason you have been unable to collect the keys from the Estate Agent. A removal company will know what to do in this very stressful situation and can come up with a solution based on their years of experience in the trade.

You’ll have the all-round confidence and peace of mind that comes from knowing your move is being carried out by a credible moving company.

Saving money
It may seem counterintuitive but using a professional mover can even save you money. If you use a ‘man with a van’ they may not have a large enough vehicle (incurring extra charges for further loads), may not have the correct insurance and, may dangerously overload the van. If you try a DIY move you run the risk of damaging your possessions which may not be adequately insured, and/or of damaging yourself through lifting and carrying objects, leading to injury and possibly extensive time off work.

Trust Perry’s
Let us take a load off and use our know-how for a successful move. It doesn’t have to be complicated when you know what you’re doing, and we will use our knowledge and expertise to help you to experience the perfect move.

Contact Perry’s on 0800 211 8030 today.

Video Surveys with Perry Removals

Video Surveys with Perry Removals

Video surveys started to become more common during the Covid crisis as the only possible option but have fast become the norm for removals companies due to the benefits they offer. Customers and clients no longer need to book days off work for the sole purpose of arranging an on-site home or office survey; now it can be done over WhatsApp or Facetime, on a day and time when it’s convenient.

The benefits of video surveys
As well as the convenience and efficient time-saving aspect of connecting virtually, it’s a great way for us as a company to reduce our carbon footprint. Reducing the use of cars reduces our CO2 emissions. And you can be sure that the service we provide is of the same quality whether via video or face-to-face.

How does it work?
All you need is a fully charged smart phone or tablet with WhatsApp or Facetime installed, along with a good wi-fi connection. We’ll call you up and our experienced video surveyor will have a chat and explain what you need to do. If you have any queries, you can ask them on the call. The surveyor will then ask you to move around your home or office pointing your device at all relevant items and will consult with you as you go. Examples of areas you could be asked to film are:

  • External areas: to show the access and parking, along with the contents of the garden, shed and garage which are to be moved.
  • Internal areas: to show the contents and furniture in each room (including the attic) which are to be moved.

Both face-to-face and video surveys are part of our free, no obligation quoting service so there’s no charge.

What happens after the survey?
Once the survey has been completed, our surveyor will prepare a written quotation to send over to you.
Quick and easy process
Video surveys can provide the same comprehensive and accurate information as a face-to-face survey and are a great way to speed up the moving process, whether the move is domestic or commercial. Contact us for further details on 0800 211 8030.

Why use short-term storage between moves

Why use short-term storage between moves

Removals and storage go hand in hand, as one often leads to the need for the other. There are a whole bunch of reasons why you might need or want to store your possessions when you move house. You may want to redecorate or renovate your new home, you could be between houses, maybe there’s a problem on moving day or you could be moving abroad or for work.

Container Storage - Perry Removals

Redecoration and renovation
Most new homes need some work, and usually it’s impossible to do this prior to moving. It’s going to be way easier to redecorate or knock down that wall without all your furniture and possessions in the way.

Between moves
To avoid being in a chain, it could be that you decide to sell your house first and then rent before you find your new home. If this is your chosen option, then the house you rent may be smaller or full or part furnished, and so may not have enough room for all your furniture and possessions.

Unforeseen problems
It could be that you’ve sold your home and suddenly the chain falls through at the last minute.

Moving abroad or for work
Your move may be temporary, or you may need to store some furniture and belongings before you find a new property.

Container Storage
Whatever the reason, sometimes the moving process is more complicated than you’d like it to be! So, what do you do with all your possessions? Perry’s temporary container storage is the answer. It’s a really convenient way of storing household goods if you don’t need access to them in between moves.

Note: Many people who consider longer term storage for their belongings opt for self-storage for the benefit of access. Not only is this a more expensive option, but research also shows that most people who pay for this convenience rarely visit their chosen facility, so ask us about how much you can save with container storage.

Once your items have been wrapped and packed at your house, they are loaded into wooden ‘breathable’ storage containers held inside a purpose-built removal van (pantechnicon). The containers are then sealed and transported to our depot where they are stored in our secure warehouse until you are ready to have them delivered to your new home.

Each container is meticulously inventoried before it’s sealed, and your goods can be held for the short or long term. Larger or more awkward items can be held on shelves and racking and insurance can be obtained at the time of booking.
If you need temporary storage, then give us a call on 0800 211 8030.

Moving abroad checklist

Our checklist for moving abroad

Moving abroad can be an exciting prospect, but with so much to organise and bear in mind, it can be a stressful one too. At Perry’s we have the experience and knowledge to help guide you through every step of the way, along with the resources to get you relocated easily and efficiently. We’ve put together a moving abroad checklist so that you can feel confident that you’ve got everything covered.

Moving abroad checklist

Know where you’re going! There are various reasons for moving abroad – a job, retirement or just the feeling that there’s more to life! If you have a new job, then the company you work for will sometimes help with your accommodation and orientation, but this isn’t always the case.

It’s advisable to thoroughly research the country that you’re moving to well in advance. Go and visit to find out what it’s like to live there and look at online guides and books. Learn about the culture so that you don’t end up in awkward or embarrassing situations with the locals! And once you have your destination address, check out the infrastructure in the surrounding area, such as schools, hospitals, banks, embassies, ex-pat groups etc.

Find somewhere to live. If you’re arranging your own accommodation and intend to purchase a property, it’s advisable to play it safe and rent for a few months before you buy. You’ll need to find out how you feel about your new neighbourhood and then investigate appropriate legal advice to find out about the laws around house buying in your chosen destination.

Do you intend to rent out your home in the UK whilst living abroad? If so, make sure that you’ve investigated all the tax implications and inform your mortgage provider to ensure that you’re not breaking the terms of your loan.

Learn the language. If you’re going to fit in, you need to at least try and talk the talk! it’s important to make the effort to learn the language of the country you’re moving to. Take an online class or find a language app so that at least you can understand and speak the basics. It’s something your whole family can do together to build up excitement about the move, though you’ll probably find that your kids pick it up quicker than you do!

Visa requirements. Now that Britain is no longer in the EU, you’ll need a visa to move to Europe as well as further afield. It’s sensible to apply for your visa well in advance, as they can take anything from 30-90 days to be approved, depending on your destination. Bear in mind that to obtain a visa, as well as having a valid passport, you may need other documentation such as proof of employment, health insurance, birth and marriage certificates to name just a few.

These useful websites can give you all the information you need on visa and embassy information: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice and https://projectvisa.com/

Health insurance. Once you move abroad, you’ll no longer be eligible for care under the NHS, as it’s a residence-based healthcare system. You’ll need to notify your GP before you go, so that you and your family can be removed from the NHS register.

Check what health services are available in the country you’re moving to before you leave, as it’s more than likely that you’ll need some form of health insurance to be able to access care.

Finance and taxes. You may not need to close your UK bank account and it’s worth retaining it in case you ever decide to return to the UK. Check with your bank to look at your options as most banks have international bank accounts; and with online banking facilities it may not be necessary to open an account abroad. Note that if you have any ISAs, you won’t be able to put any money into them following the tax year after your move. If you’re worried about any investments arrange a meeting with your financial advisor, who will also be able to help you to make sure that you have all the necessary insurance cancelled, updated or instated. And insure everything – health, life, property, pets!

Contact the Inland Revenue to find out the rules which apply now that you are leaving the UK. You don’t want to pay any extra taxes if you don’t need to! It could be worth talking to a tax expert to avoid any pitfalls.

Inform the Department of Work and Pensions, and your private pension provider if you have one. If you’ve made enough National Insurance contributions, you’ll be happy to know that you can still claim your UK pension if you’re retiring abroad.

And lastly, make sure that you have enough readily available money for your move and for unexpected costs in the time immediately afterwards. Be organised and prepare for the unexpected!

All the other paperwork! Think about any paperwork or important information you’ll need once you’ve moved, like your birth certificate, National Insurance number, or qualifications. Apply for your medical records, dental records, and eye prescription. Do you need to apply for an international driving permit? Do you need records of vaccinations? And remember to register as an overseas voter. If you do, you can still vote in UK elections for up to 15 years after you’ve left!

Who else do I need to inform? You’ve informed your doctor, so you’ll also need to inform hospitals, dentists and opticians, schools, the Local Authority, utility companies, credit card companies, cable and mobile phone operators. And don’t forget to redirect your mail!

Moving your pet. Get an animal health certificate (EU countries) or an export health certificate (all other countries).

Also, check the customs and entry requirements in your chosen destination, as these are variable from country to country. It could be that on arrival your pet has to spend considerable time in quarantine. Your pet will need to be micro chipped and immunised against rabies. Most international removal companies don’t move pets, so you’ll need to arrange their transport yourself or via a specialist pet relocation service.

Declutter. Think about what you really need when you move abroad. For example, is it worth moving your large furniture, or would you be better off starting afresh when you get there? Start early in the process and go through your house room by room. You’ll probably find many items that won’t be of any benefit to you once you’ve moved. If you’re renting out your house, you may wish to leave all the furniture in situ or even put some things in long term storage.

Arrange shipping. Finally, you’ll need to discuss your move with a trusted international removal company. At Perry’s we’ll be happy to discuss the best shipping method for your move (land, sea or air), arrange the container, coordinate the shipping, collect the appropriate documentation and liaise with our destination partner to make sure that your possessions are delivered safely. You can call us for a free quote on 0800 211 8030.

With the right support realising your dream of moving abroad can be an exhilarating experience. With our expertise, Perry’s can help you to make the transition to your new life as stress free as possible.

Top tips for packing and unpacking

Top tips for packing and unpacking

At Perry’s we’d advise you to take the stress out of your move by handing us the task of packing your possessions, leaving you to concentrate on other parts of your move. We have the training, experience and materials to do your packing quickly and efficiently. And, if instructed, we can unpack for you too! It’s also worth remembering that, under our insurance we can only accept liability for professionally packed items, not those which have been packed by you.

Perry Removals Packing Service

Think about it well in advance. The first thing you need to do is decide what you are moving, selling or just giving away. Go room by room and start a notebook of information. Be ruthless as all the things you don’t want should be gone by moving day! For example, do you really need to move all the things which have been lying untouched in your attic for years into your new attic? And remember if you’re packing less, it can save you time and also money as you won’t need as many packing materials. We can help you to work out how much packing materials you’ll need when we do our quote.

Make an inventory. It’s wise to make an inventory of everything you pack, then you’ll know where things are when you need them at the other end. You’ll also then know if anything has gone missing during the move. You could do this digitally or in a notebook, whichever you prefer.

Label boxes. Colour coding is the easiest way to know at a glance what goes where. Use a different colour for each room (this could be a marker or different coloured labels or tape) and add numbers to the boxes, on the sides and on the top. If you have fragile items, then add an extra label so that the removers are aware. You could also make a plan of where the furniture will go in each room for the removal team to follow.

Use packing materials. You could use sheets, blankets and clothes to wrap around your more delicate items, but we’d recommend buying appropriate packing materials which have been designed for the job. There is a list of materials available to purchase, please contact us for more information.

Use the right boxes. It’s crucial not to put too many heavy items into one box, which could either lead to the box collapsing or make it too heavy to lift. This is why we sell two box sizes, large ones for clothing, bedding or china, and smaller ones for heavy items like books. If you only have larger boxes available then mix lighter objects with heavier ones so that the boxes don’t get overloaded. Remember you can start boxing up things that you rarely use well in advance to lighten the work you’ll need to do nearer to moving day.

Keep things together. If you need to disassemble furniture or shelves keep all the screws etc. together in clearly labelled bags to avoid confusion. You could attach them to the items themselves or keep all the bags together in one box so that you know where they are.

Make an essentials box. When you arrive in your new home you’ll need some things right away, like the kettle and teabags, a box knife or toilet paper! Put all the things you think you’ll need first in one box (or two!) and label it clearly so that you can find it. Point it out to the removal team so that they can load it near the end. It’s advisable to carry valuable or crucial items such as jewellery or medication with you when you move rather than packing them with everything else.

So that’s the packing, what about unpacking?

Clean your new home. Hopefully the previous owners will have already cleaned your new house before they left, but if not make sure that you give it the once over before you start to unpack.

Find your essentials box. You’ll definitely want your kettle before tackling anything else! Don’t let this important box get buried where you can’t find it when you really need it.

Check your inventory. Make sure that everything is there before you unpack. You can check off your numbered, colour coded boxes on your list before you start.

Do one room at a time. If you unpack one room at a time, it’ll feel less overwhelming, as you’ll be able to see the progress as you go. It’s a good idea to start with the bedrooms as you’ll certainly need a good night’s sleep at the end of moving day! Then the bathroom and kitchen. Unpack your more essential items first.

Get some help. We can add unpacking into your quote, but if you choose to do this yourself, why not have an unpacking party? Relatives and friends could be more than willing to help and then the job will be more fun and won’t linger for weeks.

Recycle your packing materials. If we pack and unpack for you then we will take away all of the packing materials for you. Remember that you can’t put bubble wrap in with your plastic recycling. You can sometimes find bubble wrap and plastic bag drop-off points in larger supermarkets, otherwise it will have to go in your general waste. That means that you’ll need to do a lot of bubble wrap popping to fit it in your black bin!

Hopefully our advice will make the process of packing up and unpacking your home a less stressful and more enjoyable process, but if not, remember that you can always arrange for our experienced Perry’s staff to do it all for you!

Moving with pets

Much as we all love our furry (scaley or feathered!) friends, at Perry’s we know that they can present a challenge on moving day. With that in mind we’ve put together some advice to help you successfully transport and acclimatise your pets with the least amount of hassle. Planning well in advance can help you feel less stressed, and your pet feel safer, so that everything goes smoothly before, during and after your move.

Moving with Pets

If possible, the best thing for your pets is to be away from the hustle and bustle of moving day. See if you can find a kind friend or relative who’ll look after them for the day so they’re not in the thick of it. Or you could find a pet sitter who could look after them for a few hours. If those options aren’t possible, for example if your pet is particularly nervous when away from you or you’re moving a long distance you may have to keep them with you. If this is the case, move everything from one room and then put them in there with some food and favourite toys to wait out the move. Make sure you put a sign on the door so that family and removal operatives know that the door needs to remain shut. If you have children task them looking after your pet on moving day. It’s a great solution to keeping them occupied and out from under your feet too!

Using a pheromone spray is a good idea for cats and dogs. They contain calming and reassuring scents designed to help the animals to relax in stressful situations, which you can spray in both the room where they are waiting and in your new home. This can create a useful bridge. If you are using a crate, then also spray it in there. You can buy pheromone sprays from your vet, in pet shops or online. If you have a dog with a history of extreme anxiety, it’s also possible that your vet can prescribe some anti-anxiety medication.

There are some different considerations to bear in mind for smaller pets, cats and dogs.

Smaller pets

  • Get the right kind of carrier. This can vary depending on the size and type of creature. Also, add familiar things to it. Move your pet/pets into it before moving day if you can so that they get used to it.
  • Temperature control. Small mammals and birds can be easily affected by changes in temperature, suffering distress. Try and make sure that your pet stays at a consistent temperature and make sure that they have enough water to drink.
  • Move them first. Take them to the new house and set them up in a quiet space to help them to feel safe and secure. Allow them time to acclimatise. It’s a good idea to keep them in the same room for a few days or weeks so that they can get used to their new situation.
  • Fish transportation. If you have fish, you’ll need to get specialist advice on how best to transport them. Also, moving them is time sensitive, as they’ll need to be back in their oxygenated tank within 12 hours.

Cats

  • Consider a cattery. If you have a particularly anxious cat, you could take it to a cattery before the move and collect it once the move is over.
  • Leave out the carrier. Leave the open carrier in the house for a week or two before the move so that the cat can explore it. Put some toys in it, or even feed them in it. You could also leave some boxes out so that they get used to those too.
  • Keep them inside! Don’t wait until moving day to find your cat! Make sure you know where it is and keep it in the house the night before. You’ll need to get a litter tray! Once you’ve moved, don’t let them out for at least a week, so that they get used to their new surroundings. Cats are extremely sensitive, and you may lose them if you let them out too soon. If there’s a cat-flap, lock it shut.
  • Move them last. Once the rest of the house has been packed up onto the moving truck, get the cat into your carrier and take them in the car.
  • Give them some food and love! Once you’ve set your cat up in a quiet room in your new home, give them some food and some loving to help them to settle. The unpacking can wait!
  • Let them explore. Over the next few days allow your cat to gradually explore the house. Once you are sure they’ve become comfortable in their new environment you could take them out with you into your back garden.
  • Get a collar ID or microchip. Your cat may try to return to its old home and get lost, so it’s wise to do all you can to makes sure that you can be reunited if this happens. Also, leave your phone number with the new owners of your old house so that they can call you if your cat turns up there.

Dogs

  • Reassure them. Give them lots of love and attention to ease their possible anxiety over the move.
  • Make them a space. Create a space for them in your new home, with their bedding and toys. They’ll have the reassuring smell of your old home and help your dog to acclimatise.
  • Let them explore. Over the next few days allow your dog to gradually explore their new territory. Take them for walks, as they’ll have all sorts of new sights and smells to get used to!
  • Stick to your usual routine. Once you’ve moved, don’t start to do things differently. Stick to the same feeding, walking and bedtime routines.
  • Be patient. Moving home is a big deal for your dog so cut them some slack if their behaviour changes temporarily. They’re learning to settle into a new situation. Dogs tend to acclimatise to change more quickly than cats, usually within a few days, but sometimes it can take them weeks or months to settle. Just keep on reassuring them so that they feel loved and protected.

Generally, pets settle into their new environment after a week or two. The important thing is that you are all together supporting each other, and pretty soon your new house will feel like home for all the members of your family, pets included!

Who do I need to inform when I move

Who do I need to inform when I’m moving?

When you move there are lots of organisations and people you need to tell. You don’t want your grandma to go to the wrong address when you invite her to lunch or pay the electric bill for your old house! Here’s a useful list of people, businesses and organisations you may need to inform. There are lots, so we recommend that you make a list and tick them off as you go so that you don’t miss anyone out!

Who to contact when moving home
  1. Insurance companies – Sometimes it’s possible to move your existing building and contents insurance to your new house, but you’ll need to call your insurance provider and tell them the details about your new property in case any changes are necessary. You’ll also need to contact any other insurers you have a policy with. These could be for car, life, pet, mortgage, or health insurance, or you may have individual insurance policies for boiler or washing machine maintenance. Get out all your paperwork and have a look. You’ll need to notify them all!
  2. Utilities – It’s important that you inform your utility suppliers about your move at least 48 hours in advance, as this is how long it could take them to update your information. More advance notice is better once you have a fixed removal date. For gas and electricity, you can either stay with your existing supplier, or it could be a good opportunity to look for a better deal and sign up with a new one. It is crucial to cancel your existing contract for your old house and notify them of your final meter readings when you move. You don’t want to end up paying for the electricity and gas in both your old home and your new one! If you’re staying in the same area your water supplier will remain the same, but you still need to tell them about your move to avoid paying for two supplies at the same time.
  3. Banks and building societies – You’ll need to tell your bank, credit card and building society about your move. Also, if you have online savings accounts, ISAs, loans, premium bonds, child trust funds or any other investments such as a private pension or shares don’t forget about those. If you use PayPal, you’ll need to update your address with them by signing into your account online. Also, if you have a financial advisor, they’ll need to know too.
  4. Council – There are various reasons why you need to inform the council of your change of address, though you will probably have to inform each department separately! Sometimes it’s possible to change your details online for the council tax, housing benefit or the electoral register, but if you also pay for services, such as a green bin collection, you will probably need to inform them via a specific telephone number or email address. All councils work differently so some research may be required!
  5. HMRC – There’s an online service where you can change your address details for income tax, national insurance, state pension, tax credits and state benefit. https://www.gov.uk/tell-hmrc-change-address
  6. State Benefits – You’ll need to contact the relevant service. This could be for disability living allowance or personal independence payments, universal or pension credits, child benefit or something else.
  7. Medical and dental – Inform doctors, dentists, opticians and any other specialists or therapists you are registered with such as a hospital outpatients service or an osteopath. If you use a vets don’t forget to update your address with them too.
  8. TV and Driving Licences – You can change your address online: https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/cs/update/multiple-changes/index.app
https://www.gov.uk/change-address-driving-licenceAlso, you can contact the DVLA to change the address on your vehicle logbook here: https://www.gov.uk/change-address-v5c
  9. Cable, phone and broadband – Whether you have Sky or cable you’ll need to inform them about your change of address. Also don’t forget about your broadband and mobile phone provider. While you’re thinking about it, update your details with TV subscription services like Netflix or Amazon Prime too.
  10. Online shopping sites – There may be many of these to change. With some you could change as you go, but if you use any regularly, such as eBay or Amazon, it’s wise to change them as soon as you can.
  11. Work – Your employer is going to need your change of address for contact and payroll purposes.
  12. School/college/university – Educational establishments need to know your address to update their files.
  13. Solicitors and other professionals – If you have a solicitor or an accountant they are going to need to update your records with your change of address.
  14. All the others! – Don’t forget about store card and loyalty cards. We all seem to have at least one of these! Then there are libraries, subscription services such as food boxes or magazines, online grocery deliveries, gym memberships and more! And last but not least are all your relatives and friends for when you invite them over for your housewarming.
  15. Redirect your post – Just in case there’s anyone you’ve forgotten or haven’t got round to telling yet, it’s sensible to redirect your post for a period of time. You can do this for 3, 6 or 12 months for a small fee and can set this up with the Royal Mail online: https://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/redirection

If you hadn’t already thought about it, you may be feeling overwhelmed by how many people and organisations you need to contact. If you don’t mind spending a bit of money to make your life easier there are some online companies who can help you to change your address with multiple providers at the click of a button. This could make the whole process simpler and save you hours and hours of work.
